Biotechnology is one of the present fastest growing fields of science and technology in which the practice of using organisms including plants, animals and microorganisms as well as biological processes are involved. Biotechnology can be used in a wide range of applications such as in food, medical, industrial, environmental and agricultural sectors.

History
Vision
Mission

Department of Biotechnology (DBT) was established under Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in 1998 to serve three major functions; teaching, research and community service. The department was initially existed as a branch of the Chemical Engineering Department under Yangon Technological University (YTU). The manpower resources in basic foundation of the department comprise chemical engineers, veterinary surgeons, agriculturists, microbiologists, chemists, zoologists and botanists. On 16 August 2001, the department was promoted as Faculty of Yangon Technology University and steered by Department of Technical Promotion and Coordination (DTPC). The department was then transferred from Yangon Technological University to Mandalay Technological University under Department of Advanced Science and Technology (DAST) in September 2006.

Vision

  • To create a large pool of highly skilled personnel in different areas of biotechnology
  • To develop biotechnological processes, designs, techniques, equipments and solutions which can provide applications in the field of Agriculture, Food, Medicines/Pharmaceuticals, Industry, Healthcare Services and Environmental Sciences

Mission

  • To launch several important programmes relevant to national needs and efforts with significant investment using biotechnological tools for generation of products, processes and technologies to enhance the efficiency and productivity of our country.
